LIVE TECHNO | This is a giant in a small person’s clothing. I recently dug this back up to explore it again because I loved the Circuit Mono Synth so much that the original Circuit’s sequencing made sense to me as a real composing environment. One thing I noticed about all this journey to find a way to play live techno is that the more I learn and mature in how to compose with boxes like these, the more I realize sometimes that my early judgement of them was wrong. This is partly due to being less experienced in the ways of judging what would work for me, but also because the closer one gets to realizing a sound, the more devices you might need to get there start to reveal their strengths to you. If you have no vision of what you want to create there is no way to effectively evaluate or even bond with a machines logic - so, things you skipped or ignored before that vision are suddenly smacking you in the face, saying: Hello, here I am! This is the droid you are looking for! The Circuit is deceptively toy-like in its appearance and the genius of its sequencing might initially seem too simple, but when you compare it to other more full featured boxes that require a Venn Diagram to figure out (or get going), I have quickly realized making several sequences (called Sessions) with variations between them to PLAY, within seconds, then you realize you have an INSTRUMENT on your hands... not just a shiny box with lights. #lbctechno #robtronik #techno #novation #novationcircuit #livetechno Well done Novation, well done.

LIVE TECHNO | Ok, the synth mothership of my set up has landed. The mighty Novation Peak, 8 voice polyphonic synth. Coupled with my Synthstrom Deluge sequencer and fed into my Model:1 mixer I am sitting on a combo workflow, optimum toolset, and audio fidelity that I’ve been working towards for a couple of years. Lots of trial and error with different pieces - buy this, try it out, doesn’t feel right, sell, rinse and repeat - until you hit on the right (forgive the pun) mix of feel, functionality, fun, and vibe. This is a very tricky thing to accomplish when you are essentially designing your own personal instrument for composition and playback. Then add durability and portability to your calculus and finding the right combination that supports your artistic goals seems like trying to find fools gold. But holy cow does this combo work for me for my synth duties - the Peak is bigger than a Roland Boutique (obviously) but the big knobs and sliders and intuitive layout goes a million miles for confidently grabbing a knob or a slider (with future muscle memory happening) and the sound is huge or acutely pointed at some frequencies you dial in - I’m kinda overjoyed at this. It’s like finding out that the hot person you’ve been ogling has a personality and a brain to boot - instant keeper. So, just waiting for my consolidated drums in one box via the Tr-8s and I’m done.
